Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • Zest from 2 blood oranges
  • 3/4 cup olive oil
  • 3/4 cup blood orange juice
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/4 cups unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 6 cups powdered sugar
  • Dark chocolate for ganache

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). In a large bowl, mix water, sugar, olive oil, blood orange juice, zest from two blood oranges, flour, cocoa powder, salt, and baking soda until well combined.
  2. Pour the batter into greased cake pans and bake for about 25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  3. While cooling, prepare the buttercream by beating room temperature butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, vanilla extract, zest from three blood oranges, and remaining orange juice; mix until fluffy.
  4. For ganache, melt dark chocolate with half-and-half over low heat until smooth and let cool slightly.
  5. Once the cakes are cool, layer them with buttercream in between and top with more frosting and drizzle ganache.
